There is Something Afoot in Southern Syria

By Ian Greenhalgh
The Tanf border crossing is strategically important for the supply of US-backed forces operating in southern Syria, hence Syrian govt. forces are pushing towards it. On this map, Govt. held areas are marked in red, while those of the US-backed opposition are marked in blue.

It is clear that the US is able to supply these forces from Jordan as they hold a long stretch of the Syria-Jordan border.
The US appears to be playing a very dangerous game in Southern Syria in the wake of the advance into Syria of US & British special forces troops. Officially, they are there to support US-backed ‘moderates’ against ISIS, however, we now know that this is no more than a cover story and in reality, these troops, along with the US-backed forces that hold the territory along the Jordanian border, including the vital crossing at Tanf, are ISIS.
The Syrian government is well aware of this and had launched an assault towards Tanf, only to find their progress stalled by US airstrikes, as reported this morning in the Jerusalem Post:
A “warning raid” by the US-led coalition on Thursday sought to prevent an attempted advance towards Tanf base in southern Syria, said a commander in the alliance fighting in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
“The raid only destroyed a tank. It did not aim to cause casualties or damage, but to stop an attack” and advance by Syrian government forces and allied militia, said the non-Syrian commander.
The US-led coalition said it had struck pro-Syrian government forces that were “advancing well inside an established de-confliction zone” northwest of Tanf base, where US special forces operate and train Free Syrian Army rebels.
Al-Masdar gave further details later in the day:
The U.S. Coalition attacked a Syrian military convoy traveling through the southeastern countryside of the Homs Governorate, today, the Pentagon reported.
The Pentagon claimed a Syrian military convoy was heading towards their positions, when they decided to issue a warning; this was ignored, so the Coalition attacked the convoy.
Al-Masdar reached out to the Syrian military for details regarding today’s attack by the U.S. Coalition; so far, this is what’s known:
  • The U.S. Coalition warplane entered Syrian airspace from the Jordanian border
  • A convoy of five T-62 tanks were hit by the U.S. Coalition
  • Two tanks were destroyed
  • A Shilka was damaged
  • Six military personnel were killed and another three were wounded
  • Convoy consisted of soldiers from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), National Defense Forces (NDF), Hezbollah, and Imam Al-‘Ali Battalions
The Pentagon is actually telling the truth when it says that a Syrian military convoy was heading towards positions held by US special forces (and US-backed terrorist mercenaries); however it neatly omits to point out that these forces are in actuality, ISIS, which makes this US airstrike a simple case of the USAF acting as air support for ISIS while US ground forces are operating alongside ISIS.
Syria and Russia are well aware of this US duplicity, it remains to be seen what their response will be.
Meanwhile, Syrian govt. forces have made progress against US-backed rebels in fighting around Sweida:
The Syrian Arab Army (SAA), alongside the National Defense Forces (NDF), resumed their offensive operations in the eastern countryside of Al-Sweida on Thursday, Al-Masdar’s Majd Fahd reported from Damascus.
The Syrian Arab Army’s 5th and 7th armored divisions managed to capture 35km of rebel-held territory in eastern Al-Sweida, today, reaching the imperative Al-Rasi’i Well after a fierce battle with the US-backed Jaysh Assoud Al-Sharqiya (FSA unit).
According to Fahd, the Syrian Arab Army is steadily pushing east to secure the Al-Sweida Governorate, while also applying pressure on the US and Jordanian forces trying to carve out a niche in this province in southern Syria.
Meanwhile, north of the Al-Sweida Governorate, the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Legion, alongside the NDF, are preparing to resume their offensive in the southeastern countryside of Damascus; this attack will focus on the Iraqi border-crossing at Tanf.
That last sentence about preparations for a renewed offensive aimed at Tanf will be of concern to the US, it is one thing to stop the advance of a small convoy of militia with an airstrike, but stopping a full scale offensive by several well armed and battle-hardened Syrian Army formations is quite another.
Perhaps we are seeing a desperate attempt by Trump to support an ISIS ‘last stand’, something that is surely not in the best interests of the USA, but rather, part of the insidious agenda set by the criminal cabal that installed Trump and control him.
