Kurds Reliable US Allies: Former CIA Official

ERBIL — Kurds are a reliable US ally in the region, according to Michael Hayden, the now retired US four-star general and former Director of the National Security Agency, Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

The US should “continue to deepen and strengthen its cooperation with Kurdistan,” he said in an interview with Kurdistan24.

“During the time that I was in those jobs, I found that one of the best US friends in this part of the world were the people of the Kurdistan,” emphasized Hayden. 

“I understand, this is a complex issue, but I do know that there is one positive and solid truth which we all agree is that the Kurds have been a friend to the US,” he said. "That's going to be reflected in the American policy in the region," he noted.

According to him, Syria and Iraq will not be able to recover to their pre-war condition, and as the US moves forward, deep respect must be paid to the interests of those who have been friends to the US.

"The US has already strongly supported the Kurdish autonomous region inside the state of Iraq," said Hayden, hinting at possible US support for development of Kurdistan in Syria.
